Which Type of Sensory Swing Suits Your Child or Client?
Wrap and Therapy Swings
A wrap swing is a 450cm length of body forming material tied to two carabiners, so the fabric hugs the person inside. Hang it from one point for a tighter wrap that spins, or from two points for an open wrap that moves forwards and back. The large 450cm by 250cm wrap is rated to 100kg and the medium 450cm by 180cm to 90kg. This, along with the 150cm nest swings, is the swing that occupational therapists request most. Pod Swings
A pod is a semi-enclosed seat in waterproof Oxford polyester canvas, 140cm by 70cm and rated to 80kg, with a removable cushion inside of a zipper area. It hangs from a single point and is for sitting, reading and gentle rocking rather than strong swinging, which is why it pairs with the compact X-Stand, which has a small footprint for sitting-style usage. Hangouts and Cacoons
Cacoons are enclosed hanging swings that a child climbs inside of: a dark and private retreat rather than a ride. Nest Swings
A nest swing is a round, open seat on a padded ring that one or more children can share (within the weight limit). The 100cm size is rated to 100kg, the 150cm size to 140kg, in a mix of smooth mat and rope web types. How to Choose the Right Sensory Swing
- User weight. Check the capacity under Specifics on each product page. Pods are 80kg, wraps 90kg or 100kg, 100cm nests 100kg, 150cm nests 140kg, Cacoon single and double 200kg. Where a swing hangs from a stand, the lower of the two limits applies.
- Age. The manuals recommend ages 3 and up with adult supervision. The cloth swing is suggested for ages 3 to 6, and the 150cm nest, large wrap and Cacoons carry adults.
- What the child is seeking. Pressure and a snug feel point to a wrap or pod. A place to hide points to a hangout. Open, shared movement points to a nest. Spinning needs a single hanging point and a swivel.
- Ceiling or stand. A timber joist or concrete ceiling takes an anchor plate kit rated to 100kg. A tree limb at least 25cm thick, or an exposed beam, takes tree straps. No hanging point means a stand: wrap swings fit any stand, pods suit the X-Stand, U-Stand or medium swing set stand, nests the swing set stand, and Cacoons the tripod.
- Space. Nest swings need clear space on either side. The large swing set stand is 260cm wide and 206cm deep, the X-Stand base is 1.1m square, and the heavy duty tripod is the largest of the stands at 257cm tall with a 2.6x2.6x2.6m base.
- Weather and cleaning. Pod, cloth and oval seat swings are waterproof and wipe down. Nylon wraps can go outside in fine weather but must be stored dry and out of the sun. It is a good idea to keep swings clear of dirt, sticks and leaf litter.
Hanging and Safety Guidelines
- Fix a ceiling point into a joist, concrete or brick with the anchor plate kit, which includes expansion bolts for masonry and screws for timber. The manual suggests professional installation and pilot holes.
- Hang the seat low: no more than 35cm off the ground for a pod, 40cm for wraps, nests and hangouts, and 50cm for the oval seat swing, over grass, sand, wood chips or a mat rather than concrete. Choose a height that makes it easy to get on and off, while minimising fall risk.
- Keep the area clear of toys and anything a child or swing could bump into, and leave clearance around the swing in case somebody was to jump off, fall off, or swing too strongly.
- Have an adult test the setup with full weight, check that every knot, bolt and carabiner is tight, and check the child can get on and off safely.
- Some types of swings and stands support more or less swinging. Nest swings support more swinging than the other swings, while pods and wrap swings are for sitting, lying and gentle swinging. Strong swinging belongs on a swing set stand with a wide base, preferably fixed down, or a strong anchor plate or straps setup, not on an X-Stand, U-Stand or tripod, which are for gentler usage, noting that a smaller stand footprint generally means easier lifting or tipping in case of too-strong swinging.
- Fitting a swivel when spinning from a single point stops the swing or ropes from winding up. Inspect fabric, ropes and hardware at the start of each season. Product pages link to their respective PDF manuals.
NDIS and Therapy Use
We receive requests for invoices by NDIS participants regularly. Plan-managed participants email us their list of items, participant name, participant number, delivery address and phone number, and we reply with an invoice to forward to the plan manager; we dispatch once payment arrives by bank transfer. Self-managed participants claim it back through the NDIS portal and pay the invoice by bank transfer. NDIA agency-managed orders are not available at the moment.

The 150cm mat nest swing is rated to 140kg and is wide enough for an adult to lie in, the large 450cm by 250cm wrap swing holds 100kg, and the Cacoon Single and Double hangouts hold 200kg. How do I hang a sensory swing from a ceiling?
With an anchor plate kit fixed into a timber joist or into concrete or brick. The kit has a 12cm plate rated to 100kg, expansion bolts for masonry, wood screws for timber, a carabiner and a 110cm daisy chain strap so you can select the height. The manual suggests professional installation, pilot holes to avoid splitting, and keeping the plate away from the edge of a beam.
Can I use a sensory swing without drilling into the ceiling?
Yes. Every main swing type is sold bundled with a stand: the 2.1m X-Stand for pods and wrap swings, the medium or large swing set stand for 150cm nest swings, wrap swings or pods (using the attachment technique in the manual), and the heavier duty tripod for Cacoons. Wrap swings adjust in height, so they fit on any stand. Outdoors, a pair of tree straps rated to 200kg each hangs a swing from a branch at least 25cm thick or a beam. Nothing is fixed to the house.
Are sensory swings safe for toddlers?
The manuals recommend ages 3 and up, with adult supervision at all times, and warn that small parts are a choking hazard for younger children. For the youngest users choose the lowest hanging height, a soft surface underneath, and a swing the child can get on and off safely. The cloth swing is the one suggested for ages 3 to 6, and nest swings can work for assisted play. Very small children may find the wrap swings too deep to get in and out by themselves, and would need assistance and heavier supervision.
How high off the floor should a sensory swing hang?
The manuals give a maximum of 35cm for the pod swing, 40cm for wrap swings, nest swings and hangouts, and 50cm for the oval seat swing, over grass, sand, wood chips or a mat rather than concrete or tiles. Adjust with the chain, daisy chain straps or S-hooks to a height that the child can get on and off easily.
Do I need a swivel?
Only for spinning. A swivel between the hanging point and the swing lets a wrap, pod or nest turn smoothly without twisting the strap or rope, and the U-Stand manual recommends one when spinning from its centre point. Our premium swivel comes with two large carabiners and is our most bought accessory. Nest swings hung from two points do not spin.
Can I claim a sensory swing through NDIS?
That depends on your plan, and your plan manager or occupational therapist decides. What we do is invoice: plan-managed participants forward our invoice to their plan manager, self-managed participants pay by bank transfer and claim it back through the portal. Email us your items, participant name, participant number, delivery address and phone number and we send the invoice. Agency-managed orders are not available at the moment.
Can sensory swings be used outdoors?
Most can. The pod, cloth and oval seat swings are waterproof Oxford polyester or textilene, the nest swing seats are waterproof mat or rope, and the stands are powder coated steel. Nylon wrap swings can be used outside in fine weather but should not be left out, and every swing lasts longer stored dry and out of the sun when not in use.
How long does delivery take?
Most orders leave our Brisbane warehouse on the next business day, and orders placed before midday often go the same day. Delivery is usually 1 to 7 days to Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT, and 5 to 14 days to Western Australia, the Northern Territory and Tasmania. Delivery is free to most of Australia, with a surcharge on heavy items to WA, NT and TAS.
