This sensory swing is made from special Oxford Polyester canvas, meaning it's waterproof and easy to clean - perfect for both indoor and outdoor use.

Kids with autism often find this type of swing comforting, with its wrapping, gentle swinging and spinning all in one. It can be thought of as similar to a hug.

The swing is also popular with child occupational therapists, and for parents of autistic kids to use at home (eg. in the bedroom, lounge room, sensory room, play room or back yard). The blue is the most popular colour, making it a good choice if you're buying is as a gift. The swing measures 140x70cm and supports up to 80kg.

We have accessories such as a tree strap to hang from a tree or horizontal hanging point, or an anchor plate kit for use in cement or brick (or wood if you buy wood screws separately).

Who it suits

For a child who wants to be held and rocked rather than swung high: the pod closes around whoever sits in it, and families of autistic children and child occupational therapists are the people who buy it most. The waterproof Oxford polyester is what sets it apart from a cotton pod: it can hang outside on a verandah or under a tree and be wiped down, where a cotton pod needs to come in. It is rated to 80kg, although its size is best suited to smaller children.

Hanging and setup

The pod hangs from one point: a tree strap over a beam or branch, an anchor plate into concrete, brick or thick wood, or an indoor stand, and the same swing is sold with the 2.1m stand as a set. Fit the cushion within the zipper area on the inside of the pod, and hang the pod about 35cm above grass or a mat, low enough for the child to climb in and out on their own. Safety and care for pod swings

  • After fitting the cushion, make sure the zip sits on the inside of the pod. If it is on the outside, turn the pod inside out. This keeps the load off the stitching.
  • Hang the seat no more than 35cm above grass, sand, wood chips or a mat.
  • The pod is for sitting and gentle rocking, not strong swinging. Sit in the center with full weight when using it alone, in bare feet or soft shoes.
  • The canvas is waterproof, but do not let water pool inside if it gets wet, and bring it in and store it dry at the end of the season.
  • Check the fabric and stitching at the start of each season, and the hanging point and carabiners before each use.
  • An adult should supervise, and check that the child can get in and out safely. This is the part that requires more balance and manoeuvring.

Can the waterproof pod swing be used outside?

Yes, that is a benefit of the Oxford polyester canvas, which is waterproof and wipes clean, so the pod can hang on a verandah or from a tree branch with a tree strap. Do not leave water and leaves pooled inside of it after rain, and bring it in and store it dry at the end of the season.

Is there a version with a stand?

Yes, the same blue and green waterproof pod is sold with a 2.1m indoor stand, a chain, and carabiners as a set, for anyone who cannot put a hook in the ceiling. The stand is for indoor and undercover use, so with the set, you can swing indoors on the stand and outdoors with a tree strap, using the one swing.

What is the weight limit of the sensory pod?

The sensory pod is rated to 80kg, though the size best suits smaller children. It is for sitting and gentle rocking rather than strong swinging. The lowest rating in the set up applies, so the hook, strap or stand it hangs from needs to carry at least that. Our swing tree straps are rated to 200kg each.
