Which one suits depends on how your child likes to move:
- Pod swings close around the child as they sit, which makes them popular with child occupational therapists and families of autistic children, and the blue and green is our most popular colour. They are 140cm by 70cm, rated to 80kg (though they're sized for smaller kids) and made from waterproof Oxford polyester, on their own or as a set with a 2.1m indoor stand.
- Wrap swings are 450cm of body forming material: hung from one point they wrap tighter and can spin, and from two points they open up and swing forward and back. The medium wrap (180cm wide, 90kg) suits children up to about 140cm tall. The large wrap (250cm wide, 100kg) suits taller children, or a an adult; a small child can still use the large size, but may find it deep, with spare material around the head and feet.
- Nest swings are round, open seats on a padded ring, for swinging and spinning, and one or more children can share them within the weight limit: 100kg for the 100cm size and 140kg for the 150cm size, suggested for ages 3 and up. Choose a smooth mat seat, a rope web, or the web with a hole in the center to put legs through.
- Hangouts and Cacoons are enclosed swings a child climbs inside: a dark and private retreat rather than a ride. The 122cm Bebo Cacoon is most often used by one child; the Single and Double are larger and rated to 200kg, and a Cacoon needs a high hanging point or the heavier duty tripod stand.
- Other swings including the smaller options: the waterproof cloth swing, a half wrap for about 3 to 6 year olds; the blue swivel swing, for children who like to hang, spin and swing; and the oval seat swing, rated to 100kg, with a depressed seating area.
Hang a child's swing low, over grass, a mat or another soft surface, at a height they can get on and off by themselves, and with an adult supervising. The nest swings are suggested for children aged 3 and up, and the cloth swing is aimed at about 3 to 6 year olds; the pods, wraps and Cacoons are sized by weight and height rather than age. Whatever the swing, an adult should supervise, and it should hang low over a soft surface so the child can get on and off on their own.
Can a kids sensory swing be used indoors without drilling?
Yes, on a stand, so nothing is fixed to the ceiling. The pod swings are sold as a set with a 2.1m indoor stand, the medium wrap swing with the medium swing set stand, and the 150cm nest swings and large wrap swings with the large swing set stand. Check the stand's footprint and height against your room, and leave clear space around it.
Can the kids swings stay outside?
The pod, cloth and oval seat swings are waterproof and wipe down, so they cope with the yard, although water should not be left pooling inside a pod. Nest swings are usually hung from a tree or a stand outside. Nylon wraps can go outside in fine weather but should be stored dry and indoors when not in use.
